style & health - antonio interviews certifiedstrength & conditioning coach ryan masters antonio: hey guys! antonio here with realmen real style and today, i've got ryan masters. you guys have heard me talk about his channel, talk about what he does over at the workout corner, so you can go check on his website.he's a certified training and conditioning coach. did i just kill that, ryan? ryan: a little bit, yeah, certified strengthand conditioning specialist, but the same idea. antonio: well, the thing is, guys, is thatwe're here in arizona together. normally, we're on other sides of the county. ryan justmoved out to colorado. i'm in wisconsin, as
you know, but the idea was hey, i got himhere and i think that when it comes down, our bodies are so important when it comesto style. so i've got a number of questions that i havefor ryan and i'm going to go ahead and ask him right now, but ryan, really quick, i'dlike for you to take 30 seconds to tell us a little bit about yourself. actually, youcan take a minute. go ahead and tell us a little bit about yourself and what you doand a little bit more of background info for the people that have never heard of you. ryan: sure! well, i appreciate it. again,it's exciting meeting you in person finally. like you've said, we've been buddies for awhile and it's great to finally meet a person
who does something different about that. yeah, a little bit about me, i've been trainingand working out forever. probably like a lot of guys, i just was never seeing results.i was going to the gym. i was eating healthy and it wasn't until at one point when i wentto the beach -- or i went to the pool actually and i was with a friend, girl friend thati had known for a while, and when i took my shirt off, she was like, "oh, i haven't seenthat before. that wasn't there before," because i had a little bit of a gut. it was kind of tongue-in-cheek, but at thesame time, those are the little zingers that really come and get you. i was just like, okay, no more of that, so i really --
antonio: how old were you at that time? ryan: i was 24 or 25. antonio: 24 or 25? ryan: yeah, so it was about three or fouryears ago. since then, i said, "okay, enough of this working out and eating healthy, butnot seeing results," and i really put my nose to the grind. i went through the books, wentthrough the training, and was able to get the transformation that i finally wanted, the results in terms of working out. and i've been on that kick ever since becausei believe -- my personal philosophy, and hopefully i'm not running out of minutes here, it'sjust that working out for me is not about
looks. it's about the disciplines and thetraining and improving yourself, kind of like what you're talking about, just the imageand the self-confidence that you get from working hard and just putting your nose tothe grind. antonio: well, what i really liked is thatyou focused on those three aspects. you focused on not just exercising, lifting weights andthe whole fitness aspect, but it was also about the rest and it was about the nutrition, and those are things that i don't feel a lot of guys talk about. i see guys in the gymall the time that are huge and they got a big stomach and they've got big arms, butthat's not where i want to be in. i've told you, i'm almost 37 years old now.i noticed that my body is changing, things
are slowing down, my metabolism, so i realizedthat eating healthy is a big component, and i've loved that about your systems and whatyou've got today. you don't just talk about lifting weights. it's also about you needto rest and you need to eat the right food. ryan: right, exactly. it's something i callthe workout trinity, which is as you mentioned, it's food intake, exercise, and rest. it'sone of those things that naturally we think, especially when i first started it, "i wantto work out and get in shape. what do i go to do? i've got to go to the gym and hit theweights." that's just the connection there, so i go to the gym, toss some weights around, and then i'll be in shape. unfortunately, that's not the case at all.as you mentioned, food intake or nutrition
or diet, that is more important in some casesthan the actual exercise. what can really kill guys -- and it's tough for me to seebecause they've got the motivation, they're going to the gym, but because they're missingthe other two elements, they don't see the results. and so, they're like, "it must notbe in the cards for me," or "it's genetics," or "it's just i'm not meant to be in shape"and so they kind of fall off the wagon. antonio: okay. well, for today, one thingi would like to do is i want to talk a little bit about -- i want to spend this time askingyou some questions that i think a lot of the guys have out there. and if they can takesomething from these questions, i think they're going to be able to run with it. we talkedabout how 20% of the information, if they
just act on it, would give them 80% of theresults, the pareto principle. i'm going to ask you a little bit about each, but let's talk about first nutrition and putting things in your body. one of the things youtalk about is a lot of water. why? what's the deal with water and why can't i be suckingdown cokes? what can't i be sucking down coffee all day? why does it have to be water? ryan: water is just like what oil is to anengine on a car. it keeps everything running. that's what water is for our body. it's trickyin the sense that we can be in a state that's semi-dehydrated, so we're still running around, walking around, feeling okay, but when we're semi-dehydrated, our body starts shuttingoff functions such as burning fat or building
muscle, and it's not anything we're goingto feel going from day to day, but when we're fully hydrated, those operations and mechanismsare still running. in terms of when we get into drinking soda, that's when you're doing double damage because you're drinking what's called empty calories,so you're putting all this junk energy into your body. your body has nothing to do withthis, like what am i going to do? you'll go, "well, whatever, i'll just burn the fat…" antonio: i've heard people talk about a gallona day, a gallon and a half a day. ryan: um-hmm. antonio: do you recommend that much water?
ryan: i would go up to a gallon dependingon -- you know, a lot of it is going to depend on your level of exercise. i wouldn't saytomorrow, go start drinking a gallon of water just because i know what you're doing in termsof exercise right now, but if you are seriously hitting the gym a lot and you are seriousabout putting on mass or losing fat, yeah, you want to get up to about a gallon of water. now, that can include juices and fruits andvegetables. you're not necessarily just drinking a straight jug because you get water fromalmost all the food that we eat. that's a common benchmark that you hear. you also hearabout the eight glasses a day. i think that was created forever ago, but we want a littlebit more than that.
antonio: okay, so we've talked about water.let's assume we can debate about green tea and coffee and all this stuff, but guys, startdrinking your water. so when it comes down to foods, can you give me some ideas of foodsthat you cannot go long without? we know tons of things out there are bad for you, cut outpop, cut out what is not really food, but i guess be careful with beer, anything processed. one of my rules in our family is if we don'tknow where it comes from, then i'm not going to feed it to my kids, but can you name justa few foods which if you include these in your diet, you're doing great? ryan: okay. well, an apple a day keeps thedoctor away, so kind of a clichã©, but apple
is a great food. i eat an apple every dayand/or banana. you also want to look at some type of vegetables, leafy vegetable like spinachis good or something dark green like broccoli -- antonio: now, spinach is a great example becauseso many people have iceberg lettuce on their hamburgers, and we simply just replace itwith spinach. we put spinach in our omelets in the morning, which -- you're going to mentioneggs, eggs to me seem like one of the great thing that happened. ryan: yeah, eggs. you've probably heard whenit comes to building muscle, protein is a key ingredient. you want a lot of protein.eggs are the best source of protein because
it is most -- the easiest way to put it isit's easily digested by our body. it's all the protein blocks that we need for the bodyto take and then go start building muscle with. without getting it too complicated, not allproteins are created equal. proteins from soybeans are missing certain elements thatthe body can't just take that protein and start building muscle. it needs to find proteinfrom somewhere else, put them together, and then it's ready to go build the muscle, whereaseggs, it's everything you need right there, so the body takes it and it's ready to buildmuscle, and they're easy to cook. i think another thing is when i look at foods,in addition to being healthy and helping us,
is it easy to cook? can you eat it in differentways? because you don't want to be eating the same thing over and over and get staleand boring, but we've got to keep the human side to this. antonio: i'm a meat-eater. everyone knowsi came from texas. let's talk about meat. what about chicken? ryan: chicken is great. chicken, absolutely.lean meats are good, salmon, fish. salmon is a great fish. it's got fat, but it's healthyfat. antonio: what about things like tilapia, cod?i see a lot of other fish out there. can you go wrong with anything that's fish?
ryan: tilapia is good and then any other fish.i don't know if there's really any fish that you could go wrong per se. chicken, turkeyis good, pork is okay. you just want to watch for the fat, and even with the red meat. redmeat is good, but you want to make sure you're getting lean, not like prime rib. that canbe a lot of fat, so you want to steer clear of that or use that in moderation. antonio: okay, so we've talked about fruits.we've talked about vegetables. we've talked about meats. we've talked about eggs. let'stalk about things that you should avoid. we know the pop. we know the chips, but whatelse should we just stay away from? ryan: let me give you some guidelines. thisis what i use when i'm shopping instead of
saying a particular food because that canreally vary. i share the same belief as you as far as the processed foods. i really believethat leads to a lot of the diseases and cancers that we see later in life because of all thechemicals that are in the food, so one standby rule is when you're shopping, you flip whateveryou're thinking about getting over and you look at the ingredient list. and if you can'tread those ingredients, then you probably shouldn't be eating it. antonio: one thing that we do is we shop onlyon the outside of the grocery. ryan: that's another good one. antonio: so we don't go in the center unlesswe're going to get paper towels or plastic
spoons, but really, if i don't know what animalor where it came from, what plant, i'm not buying it. ryan: right, so those are two good rules touse, guidelines to follow when you're shopping. antonio: another one, if it comes throughyour window, don't eat it when it comes through your car window. ryan: yes. you've got to be careful with those, too. antonio: okay. this is just the tip of theiceberg. obviously, there are entire courses and books written on this, so we're not goingto go too deep in it. let's talk about rest. guys, notice i'm not talking about fitnessyet because these are the things that people
miss on, the nutrition and the fitness, solet's talk about rest. how do you define rest? r8yan: there are a couple of things when itcomes to the rest category of the workout trinity. obviously, you have your straightup rest where you're literally sleeping, so you want to shoot for six to eight hours anight because your body doesn't build muscle when we're in the gym. we're not actuallybuilding muscle; we're tearing our muscles down, and our body builds muscle when we'resleeping. that's when it's literally taking the stuff from the eggs and whatever elseyou eat and putting it on the muscles. so if you're cutting your sleeping time short, well, then you're not going to be getting any bigger. that's a key component, but that'sdirect rest.
there's also indirect rest, which is thisweek, this week we are in arizona. we're running, but i'm not hitting the gym hard, liftinghard. you may have seen me eating some things this morning that other -- antonio: yeah, you had about -- how many wafflesdid you have? ryan: i think i had about seven or eight waffleswith syrup and it was delicious, but this is why we train hard, so that when you areon vacation or when you're on trips, you can rest and play hard, too, and not feel bad.you know, i don't feel guilty about eating those. they were delicious and they were worthit. the last part, another good thing to consideris again, when you're working out a lot, you're
tearing down and you're causing a lot of stressto your body and it's good to get a massage at least once a quarter. nowadays, massagesare popular especially in the states. you can go to massage envy or somewhere for like50 bucks, well worth the money. to say that it's too expensive is just so -- antonio: we see in united states that peopleare always saying, "i don't have time to sleep." they go to bed. they're on facebook until1:00 in the morning. they get up at 6:00 a.m. they do a triple shot of espresso to wakeup. if you're doing this to yourself, is this going to stunt your growth and your developmentof your muscles? ryan: yeah. that's where we're looking at.the kind of stuff that i teach as far as a
big philosophy of mine is we bend our environmentto build our body, and a lot of people, the environment breaks their body and they letthe environment bend and change them, and that's the wrong way to do it. i don't consider myself a bodybuilder at all.that's not how i trained, but if you're trying to just put on muscle, get that spartan look, you have to start taking command and control of your life and changing it to help buildyour body. and so, that type of lifestyle is not going to be conducive to getting it. antonio: what about rest periods between workouts, both weights and between cardio? how does that work?
ryan: this is a very broad brush, so it canreally, really depend based on the training and what your goals are and what you're tryingto accomplish, but generally, you want at least 24 hours to 48 hours between workouts. antonio: so working out seven days a weekis not going to lead to a better body? ryan: yeah, and that's a big misconceptionagain because it kind of makes sense. it's like, "i'll just hit the gym every day thisweek and work out every day and that'll get me results faster." remember, going to thegym does not get you big. it tears down your muscles. so if you're just tearing down yourmuscles all week, what are you doing? you end up in a negative state, with nothing, whereas if you go to the gym, you work hard,
you tear them down, you rest a day, then yougo back the next day and tear it back down again, that's a better cycle to follow thantrying to work out every day. antonio: so in recap, we've talked about gettingenough sleep. we've talked about getting massages, and we've talked about having time betweenworkouts. and the fact that we don't pay attention to rest, it sounds counterintuitive becauserest sounds good. it sounds nice. that's like the gentlest part of this triangle. ryan: right. antonio: all right, so let's jump into it.we're going to talk about five core exercises and some auxiliary ones as well, and we'realso going to talk about compound versus isolation,
lifting. so really quick, what five exercises? i thinkyou mentioned running is a cardio one and you can do elliptical or anything but havinga cardio in there, you say, is really important. ryan: yeah. antonio: so that one we've heard before orit comes down to what works for you, right? ryan: right. some guys have injuries, especiallyi work with a lot of old -- i don't want to say old, but 40 to 60-year-old guys and someof them, there are just parts that just hurts to hit the pavement. in that case, they mightgo ahead and hit the bike, the elliptical, the stairmaster, whatever works for you.
another philosophy is something is betterthan nothing, so maybe you're not doing the perfect cardio, if there is such a thing, but at least you're out there sweating. antonio: and if i'm looking to build musclelike stacks of muscle, i don't want to go beyond 40 minutes on the cardio, right? ryan: right. you want to keep your cardiosessions to under 40 minutes. and just real quick, in case there's any confusion, whenyou're doing separate cardio and weightlifting, we don't do those. you don't want to be doingthose in the same workout. if you're going to the gym, you do your lifting and then anotherday, you do your cardio, or you can do them on the same day, but spaced several hoursapart.
antonio: okay, so if i have 24 hours between,so i'm probably getting two cardio workouts, maybe two weight workouts in a week, and thatwould be probably the most i'd want to do. ryan: well, no. that's four slots, okay? soif that was the case and you're my client and we're trying to put on muscle, i woulddo three gym sessions of lifting and one cardio session because when you're lifting and you'reputting on muscle, you're going to raise your metabolism and you're going to naturally beburning fat throughout the day, which is why i can eat seven waffles. i couldn't do thatevery day, but that's not going to hurt me at all. antonio: okay. so we've talked about the cardiopart. cardio is done. let's get into actually
the core exercises. what do you think aboutsquats? ryan: best, one of the best, best exercise, and it's one of those things that's counterintuitive because you're like, "i don't want big legs.i don't want to train my legs." no. there's a lot of stuff unfortunately that's just counterintuitivewhen it comes to working out, but our body operates as a system. when you're doing squatsand you train with the right rest time and the right number of sets and all this stuffi teach in my muscle growth formula class, that's when your body starts releasing moretestosterone, growth hormone, and you start building more muscle. antonio: right, and another thing about squats, which i've learned recently, is it's compound
exercise, so i don't have to work my abdominalsif i'm doing squats? ryan: yeah. the kinds of squats you thinkjust work the legs, but it's a compound movement. compound movement means it works multiplemuscle groups and squats do hit your legs, your glutes and all that, but they also hityour core. so yeah, they hit your quads, it hits your abs and a little bit of obliques, and really help tighten up your body. antonio: okay. now tell me about the benchpress. ryan: the bench press, this is everyone'sfavorite staple gym exercise, right? so we probably don't have to tell guys, "bench pressis good for you. go and do bench press." antonio: i think it's important to state though.it's one of the five cores. i mean, this is
something that it just needs to be a partof the workout. it works the chest. it works the arms. ryan: shoulders. antonio: shoulders as well. ryan: yeah, exactly. the main reason we stickto the five core exercises is you start getting better at the form because you're doing thosesame exercises. if you're trying something like this crazy muscle confusion and you'redoing new exercises every day, well, how good are you really getting at the technique? theform is very, very important. never sacrifice form for weight when it comes to working out.
antonio: now, let's talk about some -- goback to your experience as a gymnast. what two exercises would you talk about? ryan: there, we'd be looking at dips and pull-ups,two great exercises. again, they're compound and they're body weight exercises. now, acouple of caveats there like if you're a bigger guy and you can't quite do pull-ups yet, hopefullyyour gym has an assisted machine which is where you stand on a bar and it lets you putweight on, and that actually reduces the amount of weight you're lifting, so you can do kindof assisted pull-ups or assisted dips. that's one way to start. for dips, another thing, if they don't havethat, if you have a chair and a bench, you
can put your feet up on the chair and do benchdips like this and this is kind of like a progression to work you up to do regular bodyweight. antonio: now, what about with pull-ups? there'sthe overhand and then there's chin-ups, right? so the difference? ryan: the chin-ups hit your biceps a littlebit more. you can just see like when you pronate versus having it in, they hit your bicepsa little bit more, but they both work your back. again, i prefer chin-ups, but that'sone of those areas where if you're going to do one of them, then that's better than nothing. antonio: so these five core exercises, ifyou focused in on these and you ate well,
you rested well, people are going to be asking,"hey, what kind of workout do you do?" you're going to want to see visible results. ryan: yeah, and your co-workers want to know,"what's your secret, man?" well, there is no secret, but yeah, that's definitely theones to focus on. antonio: i think we talked about this. weget wrapped around the axle. we try to focus in or we want to learn all these differentexercises. we want to know what all these secrets are. at this point, we're trying togather so much information when many of us are just -- we're just lazy. we're just scared.we just need to take action and focus on that 20% and get to the 80% level.
and then when you're at that 80% level, theni think you're in a better position to start asking the questions about muscle confusionand variations in each of the exercises. if you're doing those exercises consistentlyand you're eating right, all of a sudden, you're just going to be in a much better positionand i think most of us are right now. ryan: the important thing again that i teacha lot of my guys is we're learning there's only so much that anybody can teach you. therest, you have to learn just by doing. and because we're talking about the human bodyhere, everyone is different. our moms are right. we're all special and we all reactto things a little bit differently. certain cardio may work better for me thanit does for you. particular foods may affect
you more than they affect me, and no one inthe world could tell you that. no one in the world could tell me that. but when we're takingaction and we have the right systems in place, then we start to learn what affects our bodyand how it affects it, and we can use that to our advantage so we're training a littlebit smarter. antonio: perfect! all right. well, this hasbeen ryan masters. thank you for being a guest here at real men real style. ryan: absolutely! antonio: guys, if you want more information,i've got a link to his youtube channel, the workout corner. any other ways they can findyou online?
ryan: yeah. you could check out the youtubechannel. i'll also email my guides everyday, so you're welcome to download. i have a coupleof free workouts you can get started on at theworkoutcorner.com. just sign up for oneof those to get you started. if you want to jump right into it, there's my muscle growthformula where i kind of break all this stuff out step by step to follow and you can gothrough that as well. antonio: and you've got tons of great, solid, free content right there on the web. guys, one thing i really like about ryan -- again,i'm approaching 40 years of age and your body starts to change. what i really like aboutryan is he has a lot of knowledge for the guys in their 30s, 40s, 50s who are stilllooking to take care of their bodies. you've
got some great information about that. ryan: yeah. and like what we were talkingabout earlier, especially for guys like us and your subscribers, yeah, looks are niceand it's nice to get double-takes from girls or whatever, but it's really more about commandinga greater presence of being able to have more energy throughout the day to hit your tasksharder, wake up ready to go, and just kind of building your world around you. at leastthat's my philosophy and values. fitness is a supplement to support my lifestyle, notto be my lifestyle. antonio: yeah. there's a great book out therethat's called "spark". you guys should check it out. they talk about the relationship ofa healthy body with a healthy mind, and how
actually exercising in a sense makes you smarteror it makes your brain, in a sense, be able to perform at a higher level, which is prettyimportant no matter where you want to be in life. so guys, i will see you in the next video.take care. bye-bye. ryan: bye.
fashion 2017 fall
mary grove: hello, goodafternoon, how is everybody? excited? thank you so muchfor joining us. my name is mary grove, and i'm the director of google for entrepreneurs, and it is my tremendous honor to welcome diane vonfurstenberg back to google. our guest today isa remarkable talent who needs nointroduction, but i would like to share threethings that i particularly
admire about diane. the first is that she isthe ultimate entrepreneur, an incredible self starterwhose story really embodies the quintessentialamerican dream. from diane's arrival innew york city in 1970 with just one suitcasefull of dresses, dvf products are now sold in55 countries around the world, and has evolved far beyond theiconic wrap dress which we're celebrating the 40thanniversary of this year.
number two, is diane'ssteadfast commitment to empowering womenall over the world. in 2011 she established, throughthe diller von furstenberg family foundation, the dvf awards. and these awards recognize womenwho show tremendous courage and bravery in theface of adversity. i admire everything shedoes to support women. and thirdly, i admire hergenerosity and openness and sharing sopersonally her own story,
her own amazing family history, her journey in establishing and building a global brandthat is loved around the world, her personal battle with cancerwhich she fought courageously and successfully, and herviews on love and life. please join me in welcomingdiane von furstenberg. diane von furstenberg: hi. mary grove: welcome, it'swonderful to have you back. diane von furstenberg:thank you. when i came hereto speak in 2005,
i think, they werepractically no women here. and i'm not sure theothers knew who i was. and that's definitely changed. and but it was prettyamazing already, but it was nothingcompared to what it is now. so it's fun to be here. mary grove: welcome back. before we get started, i wantto cue just a quick video, which is the journey ofthe wrap dress.
[video playback] [music playing] [end video playback] so diane, i wantedto get started by talking about your roots, and you shared so much of your personal journey--you open your book by talking about your mother's courageousstory as a holocaust survivor, how she gave birth toyou against all odds. and she said to you, youare my torch of freedom,
and taught you thatfear is not an option. can you share with us a memoryof how your mother helped you become the womanyou wanted to be. diane von furstenberg:well, first of all, i think my mother was, whatthey call today, a tiger mom. which is that, if iwas afraid of the dark she would lock me into thecloset, which today you could probably be arrested for. but of course, after 10minutes, it wasn't dark anymore,
because when you're in the darkfor 10 minutes you can see. and also you realize thatthere's no reason to be afraid. so my mother didn'twant me to be afraid. and one of the reasons why shedidn't want me to be afraid is because of her own history. at the age of 22, shewas a prisoner of war and she went to thenazi concentration camp of auschwitz andravensbruck and a third one. she came back, sheweighed 49 pounds,
i mean, less than her bones. she wasn't supposed tohave survived but she did. she went back home andher mother fed her. six months later her fianceecame back to belgium-- he had been in switzerland--and they got married, and the doctor said youabsolutely cannot have a child. because if you havea child-- your body can't handle it, andbesides the child will probably be not normal.
well, sure enough, i wasborn nine months later, and i was not normal. and you know when--well, you are all young so you know that whenyour mother is very strong you protect yourselffrom all that strength. but then when yourmother passes away, you think a little bit more ofthe impact that she had on me. and so i wantedto tell her story. and by telling-- by doingresearch and telling her story,
i realize that iam her vengeance. and i am the way i am because ofthat, because of what she was. so i ended up writingabout my mother and then ended upwriting about me. and so this book, this memoirhas been really difficult. i've never gone to a therapybefore, and i did that. but i really opened myself, and i tell it really as it is because i think thattruth and honesty is certainly the most useful thing youcould do for yourself,
but it's also good to doit, to have others do it. so i am glad that people areresponding well to the book, because otherwise iwould feel terrible. i would feel horrible thati open myself for nothing. so i hope you enjoy. mary grove: thank you fordoing that, absolutely. so in the business offashion the wrap dress which launched in 1974, by1978 had sold millions already throughout the nation and it wasrevolutionary in its softness,
its versatility. what do you think the wrapdress symbolized then, and what does it symbolizenow, 40 years later. diane von furstenberg: well, the first thing it symbolized is that i could pay my bills. which was, at theend, my first goal was to be independent becausemy mother put it in my head, and i really wantedto be independent. so i became independentthrough that dress.
but because it was fashion, what now i realize-- of course i didn't realize it then, but now looking back-- i realize that as i was becomingindependent and confident and the woman i wantedto be, i was sharing it to other women in fitting rooms. so i was getting confidentand i was selling confidence through the dress. so that dress, to me,i just made that dress. it's not like i thoughtit was something
that will live for that long. but i guess that inthe sense that it was my need, my ownpersonal need for freedom. the dress was good quality, itwas effortless, it was sexy, it was not too expensive, but it just molded you. it was proper enoughand sexy enough. somehow i guess that messagethat was done through a dress really took on, and womenreally reacted to it. and everyone in americawore that dress.
i mean, i was 25 andwithin no time at all we were making 25,000dresses a week, which is 50,000sleeves, that's a lot. i remember i used to say thatbecause it looked like more. so i lived anamerican dream, which of course, my american dream isnothing compared to a google. i mean, it was very minute. but it was, nevertheless,an american dream and i was a young woman.
mary grove: so speaking ofgoogle, and welcome back to silicon valley, you'vealways been so transformative and disrupting the fashionindustry if you look back across the last four decades. you started selling your dresseson qvc and the home shopping network before merchandiseclothing was really sold on television. last year you worked with sergeyto debut google glass in a dvf fashion show, as well as launchthe first shoppable hangout
where consumers could purchaseproducts live through a google+ hangout. so looking now, what technologies are you most excitedabout or do you think are most critical to thesuccess of your business? diane von furstenberg: wellfirst of all, i joke always and i say that i'm sohappy that i am old enough to have danced at studio54, and young enough to be part of thedigital revolution.
mary grove: i saw youinstagram outside. before we came in. diane von furstenberg: i do. and so i love technology. and i think it's soincredible what has happened, and all the groundsthat we've broken, and all the things that youcan do that there was no way that we could dreamthat we could do. so i am very, veryinto it and i love it.
and again, it was an accidentthat i presented the google glass first in the world. i mean, it was-- butit just shows you that when you areyoung-- or not young-- it's important to push thedoors whatever is happening. and it's justbecause i saw sergey hiding behind a treetrying these things. and i said, what are you doing? and he said, come, i show you.
and they hadn't shown anyone. this was in sandvalley and he showed me that and we started to talk. and it was july and isaid, sergey have you ever been to a fashion show? he said, no never. i said, you should cometo my show in september. that was it. and then two or three weekslater, i get a call from sergey
and he said, you know,i was thinking how about showing googleglass on the runway. and i thought, oh. i didn't even understandwhat he was talking about. i said sure. and what it was,it must have been that day with talkingmarketing, and saying, how can we show it to the world in theway that is not just dry tech. and somebody saidthe word fashion,
and he said, oh fashion. i have a friend in fashion. she invited me toa fashion show. and that is actually howthe whole thing happened. and when you read thebook, it's at the very end of the whole story it's atthe very end of the book. you'll see that that day iwasn't particularly loving my show, and so anyway, google glass kind of saved my show because-- anyway,so it's a long story,
but it just showsyou that you always have to be very wide open andcurious and open to anything. mary grove: so on that note,in following your journey, i notice that you have a uniquefor recognizing an opportunity and then seizing the moment. so one example wouldbe in your book you talk to how youhad trained in italy, and you noticed this trend ineurope where t-shirts, fashion t-shirts were just becomingfashionable in the jersey
material, the soft material. and so you broughtthat to america and then evolved itto the wrap dress. another example would berelaunching your business when you noticed thatthe hip young girls were wearing vintage dvfdresses from the 70s and relaunching the wrap dress. i'm curious if you see anybig new opportunities today, if you think fashion startupscan really do anything
to seize a gap. diane von furstenberg:oh, my god. you don't need any-- you don'tneed me to tell you that. i mean, there's so manyintelligent people here were looking for opportunitiesand pushing the ground. i mean, if anything, i'mhere to learn from you. but it is, i think itis important to dare and push and look and becurious and also when you fail, you fail.
then you get backup and do it again. it's-- life is a journey. it's a big journey. and people come in, peoplego out, you have successes, you have failures, and as longas you're true to yourself, it's ok. mary grove: so i wantto talk about the brand, the global brand thathas become a phenomenon. and you arrived in new yorkand launched with the dress,
but ended uptransforming and growing the line into cosmetics, intofragrances, a home line, and so much more. can you talk about thelessons you learned along the way about developingdvf as a brand? diane von furstenberg: oh, mygod, i learned so many lessons. but i am not necessarily agood example of business. i am an entrepreneur. i am a dreamer.
and i'm a person who canmake-- who can have an idea and make it happen. i'm not the best executive. i'm not a ceo. so the lesson thati would say is that it's important to recognizeyour strengths and weaknesses. but i mean in the book--this book is like therapy. i never went to therapy before, and this book was therapy. but it shows that it doesn'tmatter how old you are.
i mean, i'm a grandmother. i'm old, i have-- i came up withsomething that's already 40, that you think that's so old. and yet i still think ofmyself like i'm a young girl and i'm starting up. and i guess i'llalways be like that. but i think in a sense that'salso my energy and who i am. that's why i startagain and again. mary grove: love is lifeis love, i heard you say.
so in the book you talkabout how you often speak with young people anda favorite piece of advice you give them is it's passionand persistence that matter, and dreams areachievable, but there are no shortcuts, and no hard work. what is the best-- i want toflip that question and ask you. what is the bestpiece of career advice you received along theway, and how did that impact your journey?
diane von furstenberg:i don't know. i mean, the only real advicethat i got from my mother which i remember the mostis never be a victim, and never blameanyone for anything even if they are blameable. just deal with it. and that was great advicebecause resentment is toxic and blaming peopledoesn't help anything. i mean, the independence--what my mother gave
me was the independence andthat is really something that i value so much. now what i found out by myself, and really, really early on, and i am astounded thati realized that early on, and that would bemy advice to anyone, is that the most importantrelationship in life is the one youhave with yourself. i don't think i can givebigger advice, advice that applies to everyone, men, women, old, young,
it doesn't matter. because at the end, thestrength is in yourself and it's not in somebodyelse, and it's not any guy that's goingto make-- it's not. it's you. then if you havethat relationship with yourself figuredout, and it's not like it you figure it out andit's good forever. it's practice.
it's every day. you have to beangry with yourself, and then you have tobe nice to yourself, and a lot of different things. it's like pruning a tree,or cleaning the plumbing. but once you do havethat, and once you really have a relationshipwith yourself, then any other relationshipis a plus and not a must, and so you're not needy.
and i think that it's important. so that's my advice. remember. mary grove: most importantrelationship is with yourself. diane von furstenberg:that's right. mary grove: soshifting gears a bit, i want to talk aboutthe future and what you're focused onin the road ahead. can you tell us a littlebit about your new tv show?
diane von furstenberg: oh. yeah, so this yearwas very, very busy. in january i celebratedthe 40th anniversary of the wrap dress in abig exhibition at lacma in the los angeles, which isnow featured in this big coffee table book, rizzoli,"the journey of a dress". then i finished my memoir, whichwas very painful and very, very tiring. and then i also did something alittle crazy, i did a tv show.
and it's called the houseof dvf and in a sense it's both to be intouch with young people and also because i see whatgarbage that my granddaughters watch on television. and so how can i go to thatgenre and apply to that, and make it fun, and makeit naughty, and make it informative, butat the same time manage to pass some strong, empowering messages. so we came up withthis idea of six
to eight girls whocome into the company and they learn everything frommerchandising to retailing to marketing and design, and then one of them will win and becomea brand ambassador. so we already havethree episodes which you couldprobably see online. it's on e. and sundaynight at 10 o'clock you can watch episode four. and it's eightepisodes and it will
end on december 20th i think. mary grove: great. diane von furstenberg:and one of the candidates is from the bay area, but i'mnot going to tell you who wins. mary grove: so interms of looking ahead from a business perspective,in your book you talk about dvf products aresold in over 55 countries, one of the more recentcountries you entered was china. can you talk about your entryinto the chinese market,
how you-- diane von furstenberg: ok,first, first of all i love china. i mean i grew up readingbooks about china, pearl buck, or tenten. i was always fascinated bythe mystery and the strength in the wall ofchina, everything. so the first time i wentto china was 1989 or 1990, and there were only bicyclesin beijing at the time.
so i wanted to be known-- iwoke up about maybe by now it's maybe four yearsago, and i said, i want to be known in china. and so i went to china a lot. and i became very friendlywith a lot of people, artists and writers, and bloggers. and i spent a lot of timebecause i wanted to-- because when i was a younggirl, even though it's funny because even though ididn't think i was going
to be in fashion, iremember that i used to say, if you sell one t-shirt toevery chinese, you make-- and so i alreadyhad that in my mind. so i really wantedto come to china and not sound like anamerican colonizer. and so i spent timeknowing the people and becoming friends with them. and little by little i gotknown in china and i have-- mary grove: how many stores now?
diane von furstenberg:oh i don't know. i have-- i have about40 stores i think. quite a lot in china. and i have how many? one million or twomillion followers? i mean a lot. so i like chinese people. i think they are smartand they they're great. i totally identify and iwish i spoke the language,
but then again, i'mnot mark zuckerberg. mary grove: so interms of community, you've been incrediblyinvolved through philanthropy, through your ownfamily foundation. more recently supportedefforts like the high line in the west side of manhattannear the google office and a new park and artspace that's called pier 55. what is your hopefor where new york city might be in 5 to 10 years?
diane von furstenberg:well, let's hope that it stays out ofthe water for one thing. and you know, i alwayssaw new york like venice. for me it's like venice. it's the center ofboth commerce and art. every artist in the worldwants to show in new york and be sold in new york. so for me venice and newyork were very similar. so that's why i'm veryinvolved into the waterways.
and i think thatwe had a tendency of going inland and buildinghighways along the coast. so now we're tryingto the change that. when i first came to newyork it was very, very cheap. but it was alsovery, very dangerous. probably goes together. but at the sametime, they were a lot of-- because it was very cheap, there were a lot of artists there and it was fun.
it was really, really fun. now it's different. it's much more expensive, and it is different. but it still hasa lot of energy. and i think that one of thereasons that new york has so much energy is becauseit's built on granite. so the minute you get to newyork, you have a lot of energy. and i'm sure google isbuilt on granite too. whereas paris isbuilt on sand, so you
have a tendency tokind of fall asleep. mary grove: do you spendmuch time back in europe now? or are you betweeneurope and here? diane von furstenberg:i am european, so i have a place in paris. and so it's important forme to be-- it's nice for me to go to europe. but my children andmy grandchildren now live on the west coast, soi have a tendency to go west.
mary grove: are there anyup and coming designers you think we shouldbe on the lookout for? diane von furstenberg:well, i am the president of the councilof fashion designers of america so i am basically themother of all designers so as the mother of all designers,i can't have a favorite child. mary grove: youhear it here first. so on that note, i am curious. we talked a lot about howyour story personifies
the american dream, you're an entrepreneur with this tremendousglobal perspective, and the way that businessesare born and grow has changed tremendouslyin the last 40 years. even in fashion, you'veseen the consolidation of the large departmentstores, for example. do you think that it wouldbe easier or more difficult now to build a globalbusiness and brand? diane von furstenberg: i don'tthink it's harder, actually.
i think maybe it's easier. because you have the internet,so everyone has a voice. if you have the internet, youjust do a website at the start. so then you have a voice. so i think that theinternet has given everyone more democrat-- democracy? democracy. even though sometimesit's a little dangerous. so i think that overall, andthe world is more global,
and also you have morementoring systems. and as the cfda, we have anincredible program with vogue. it's called the cfdavogue fashion fund. and we mentor youngdesigners and help them and that has reallyhelped enormously. so i think that peopleare more into mentoring. but of course, everything goes fast. mary grove: in afew moments, i'm going to switch gears and takequestions from the audience.
so if you have aquestion in mind, please feel free togo ahead and line up. so diane, i want totalk about your legacy. and you've talked aboutthe various phases of your life, howit was independence, getting independence, how itwas growing your business, now it's sort of whatlegacy do you leave behind. you said that whenyou and joel horowitz were working on transformingthe company in 2012,
you did an exercisewhere everybody defined three words thatexemplified the brand. those were effortless, sexy, and on the go. so if you coulduse three words now to describe the legacy youhoped dvf will leave behind, what might they be? diane von furstenberg:well, i think that my mission in lifeoverall, business or not, is really to empower women.
since i empowered myselffirst, and after i've empowered myself,it's important that i feel that everyone can bethe woman they want to be. and so i do thatthrough my work, by making them feel sexy andattractive with the clothes, but also through mentoringand philanthropy. so maybe i hope to beremembered as a woman who did it for herselfand for others. mary grove: let's take somequestions from the audience.
if you could introduce yourselfto start, that'd be great. audience: hi, diane. my name's connor i mightbe behind the camera-- diane von furstenberg:the only man here? mary grove: my husbandis also here in the back. diane von furstenberg:all right. who's is your husband? mary grove: steve grove. audience: the bearded one.
audience: well, thank you somuch for coming out and talking to us. it's been wonderfulto hear from you. my question is onyour advice that you give about having yourrelationship with yourself is so importantand that you we're astounded you foundthat out so early. how did you find thatout, and what do people do on a day to day basis tohelp build that relationship?
diane von furstenberg:how did i find out? i don't know. i was fascinated by mirrors wheni was a tiny, tiny little girl. none that i liked what isaw in the mirror, because i didn't, but i liked that ihad control over that thing. you if i did that, she would do that. you did that, they'd do that. so i think that itstarts from there. my relationship, it startedwith the mirror, i have to say.
but it's wasn'tnarcissism, because i didn't like what ilook like at all. but i like that i had control. and so it made me realize thati have control over myself. audience: that's awesome. i've always tried to explain mylove of mirrors to other people too. so i can just pointthem right to that clip. that's perfect.
thank you. diane von furstenberg:that's very brave of you. be brave, that's right. audience: i have a questionfrom when you first emerged in the fashion scene. what has been thebiggest surprise to you in terms of what you'veseen in the fashion world? diane von furstenberg: whatis the biggest surprise that i've seen inthe fashion world.
oh my god, i don't know. i guess that there arenot that many things that actually surprise me. audience: it can bea specific trend. diane von furstenberg: what? diane von furstenberg:oh, the big trend. but the big trends, they don'tappear like all of a sudden it's a big trend. it kind of crawls on you.
and if you are a designerwhich at the end is what i am, you kind of smellit before it comes. and that can't be explained. that's really just themystery of fashion. audience: so you can't besurprised, you know everything? diane von furstenberg: no, idon't know everything at all. and the you know, the moreyou know you know nothing. no, no, no. but i think it's-- maybe whati would say what surprised me
the most is that fashion atthe end is a huge industry, huge industry. but it's also a very mysterious, very mysterious thing. that expands not juston clothes, but food, and the way people do things. a little bit of acollective madness. audience: thank you. audience: hi, diane,my name is maida felix. you've talked about success, and how you sometimes failed
and sometimes succeeded. so i was wondering if you canrecall a time where you failed? diane von furstenberg:oh, i failed many times. you've got to read the book. audience: yeah. [laughter] diane von furstenberg:i failed many times, but what i will sayto you is that i never dwelled on my failures.
i just said, ok move on. this is the reality, whatever, cut your losses, and then move on. and then as you moveon, things happen good. and then you don't evenrealize that it all started with a failure. so that also was alesson from my mother. she said not to dwellon the darkness. always look for thelittle bit of light,
and build around the light. audience: and doyou think-- where do you find that strength? because i feel as youngpeople, sometimes it's easy to get comfortableif you have a job. how can we find that strengthto jump and not be afraid? diane von furstenberg:the truth is that it's not the strengththat you need in order to jump. you got to want it.
and wanting it most oftenstarts from frustration. i don't know-- i don't thinki know any successful person whose success didn't startfirst with a huge frustration. diane von furstenberg:that is the truth. audience: diane,my name's emily. i have a question for you. so at google-- diane von furstenberg:you have a pretty dress. audience: oh, thank you.
it's designed by you. so we don't have a lotof women at google, but i imagine in theprofessional world, it's full of womenand there's lots of cattiness and mean people. how do you handlereally catty people? like, in your show? diane von furstenberg:we aren't catty, are we? no, it's-- how doyou, i don't know--
i wouldn't wasteany time on that. i really wouldn't. at the end, you know it's justwhat matters is what matters. audience: i reallyenjoy your show. and i love the message you give. diane von furstenberg: ohyou mean about the show. diane von furstenberg: well, that, you have to understand, that the producerspushed them to. that's the show.
the show they kind of say,oh come on, are you upset, they-- and i getso mad when they do that because i don'twant that to be there. so it's to createa little drama. and i remember mygranddaughter telling me, didi, you need drama, you need drama. mary grove: but you havezero tolerance for-- diane von furstenberg: no,i don't no, i don't like it. audience: hello,my name is firese.
i was wondering inyour career, how much were you driven bythe business side and how much were youdriven by the artistic side? diane von furstenberg: my firstdrive was to be independent. so it was really to besuccessful financially, to buy my finance independence. and so i didn't evenrealize at the time how much the creativeside mattered. i mean, i just usedthe creative side
in order to achievethe next thing. i would like to be able to spendmore time now on the creative because i realize thati'm much better at that. but unfortunately, you need both. but i personallyprefer the creative. the creative is notjust designing a dress. it's thinking howyou could sell it, it's also marketing, it's alot of that, and that i love. audience: hi, diane, i'm lily.
so in the lastfew years, there's been so much of a focuson, can women have it all, the feminine and entrepreneursand family life and business life, and you make it seem easy. diane von furstenberg: it's not. audience: and i'm justwondering what advice you have for people tryingto strike that balance and go forward. diane von furstenberg:it's not easy.
i mean it's not easyto-- people always say how did you have a careerand children and a husband, and most probably thehusband is the hardest. and it's so unfair that isay that, because in my case, it's not true. i have a husband whois absolutely not hard. but to combine it allis very, very difficult. but the truth is i thinkthat women are equipped-- i think women, we multitaskbefore there was such a word.
because we are usedto handling it all and do it all and everything. since we're mostlywomen, i always say, we have our period every month, and nobody knows about it, right? men couldn't handle that. so i think that we'rejust used to-- it's hard. it's hard to do it all,it's hard to have it all. but it's worth it.
because i think a womanshould have children, whether she has them oradopts them or whatever, and i also thinkthe woman should have an identityoutside the home. so there you go. good luck. my name is emily and thankyou again for taking time to come here and to meetall of the lovely ladies and gentleman here at google.
i want to share withyou a little bit about myself, because they do want to ask you for your advice. i grew up being veryinvolved in art and design, and i thought thatthat was something that i reallywanted to get into. when i graduatedcollege, we were just recovering from theeconomic recession so at that point intime my peers and i,
we were just happy to get a job. we weren't thinkingabout our passion, we just wanted to makesure we weren't unemployed. so i got into tech, and ifound my way here at google. and when google comescalling, you don't say, oh well, i don't know, idon't want to be in tech, you just say hey where is thedotted line, i'm going to sign. but now i definitely wantto ask for your advice and see if i still have apassion for art and fashion,
what should i do? should this besomething i can pursue? diane von furstenberg: ithink that first of all you have to make surethat you have to have an idea that make sense. and maybe you can combine yourpassion for art with tech. and that's really how it goes. you have to dosomething that you like. clearly.
but i don't know, maybeyou're just a painter, and you'd like to paint, andyou could also be a tech. i think that you have to listento heart but also to your brain and make sure that whateveryou do makes sense. audience: hi, so i'm a littlebit older most of the crowd here. so when i'm listening to youtalk about all the failures you've had in yourlife, and for me, especially since i'm kindof stuck in the start
over phase, throughno doing of my own. how do you go about the startover after the failures? do you have a ritual? because i mean, it'sgoing to happen a lot. that's part of being alive. so what's your process fordealing with it after you figured out you failed and youneed to go onto the next step? diane von furstenberg:don't dwell on the negative. just don't dwell on thenegative and learn from it.
and just be excitedabout starting again. i mean just starting, there's nothing more fun than starting becauseso much is unknown. and the unknown is exciting,it shouldn't be scary. i think it's exciting, and you just go for it. i mean, this is a companywhere if you don't believe in miracles here, then i don't know. mary grove: one followup question, diane, related to that.
in your book you talk aboutyou had this incredible success starting so earlyin your twenties, and then you took a briefhiatus and then decided to relaunch and come back. so what was thethought process where you decided to start again? diane von furstenberg:well, i thought i was finished with fashionand then i came back, and i realized mybrand had disappeared.
with that, also a sideof my identity and i didn't like that. i mean, i've hadfailures, but i mean, when i hear it likethat, it's like overall, my life has beenpretty successful. so what i tried toexplain in the book is that noteverything goes right. and you just make it work. but there were a lot of momentsthat-- i mean, nobody outside i
was interviewedrecently in london by a journalist, a fashionjournalist, who has known me all along allthrough these things, and he had no idea that i wasgoing through a difficult time. because you don't say it. and he read thebook, and he said, oh my god i had noidea, this and that. so what i triedto do in the book is that it's like anx-ray of how i felt.
and how i felt is how i felt,so outside nobody knew that. mary grove: we're gladyou launched again. last question. audience: hi, i'm erin. i just had a quick question. there's a lot of interestingstuff going on in fashion tech, particularly arounddemocratizing luxury brands. i think you yourself are onwebsites like rent the runway, i don't know ifthat's by choice.
i'm just curious tosee as a designer if you think that those sorts ofmechanisms devalue your brand, or you're happy that morepeople are wearing them? diane von furstenberg:i met those girls. i think i was the firstperson that they came to see and they were smart. i almost hired them. and again, i said about them--i don't know if anyone knows, but it's about rentingclothes-- and i
think that they're greatgirls, but i'm not sure that five years from nowthat what they're doing now is exactly what theywill be doing then. at this point they have thelargest dry cleaning business in the country. so it's-- but itwas their way in. and so we'll seewhere it all goes, i think we all welcome that. i think we all welcomethat, i think it's all good.
mary grove: thank you. diane von furstenberg:even fighting fakes, you know that'spart of the journey. mary grove: sobefore we wrap up, i'd like to closewith something that i like to call freeword association. where i say oneword, and i'm going to ask you to say the firstword that comes to mind. starting with fashion.
diane von furstenberg: fashion, fashion i would say beauty. beauty, mary grove: travel. diane von furstenberg:travel i would say adventure. mary grove: belgium. diane von furstenberg:belgium, i would say boring. mary grove: confidence. diane von furstenberg:confidence i would say confidenceis indispensable.
mary grove: google diane von furstenberg:google is google is what it soundslike it googles. mary grove: passion. diane von furstenberg: huh? diane von furstenberg:passion, passion, life. mary grove: role model. diane von furstenberg:role model, my mother. mary grove: andfinally, wrap dress.
diane von furstenberg:wrap dress paid my bills. [laughter and applause] oh that, that's a littlepiece of the tv show. mary grove: beforewe close, we want to give everyone a sneak previewof this sunday's episode. -amanda come on in. how are you? -good, how are you? i'm literally freaking out, likeshaking, my heart's beating,
i think my vision islike going blurry. -bronson came to see meand he say, wow you know, i'm a little nervous. how's it going? -at times, there's likea little bit of tension. -what goes on? -well i got in a littleargument with britney today. she's trying to say littlethings to put herself here and put the others below, and i don't think that's right.
she likes to be the boss andtake charge of the situation. and i've kind ofjust let her, but i'm at the point where i--i'm getting emotional. i don't usually-- -no, that's ok. -thank you. -you know, when iwas young i didn't want to be taken advantage of. as i get more confidentand less insecure,
i realize that you haveto stand for who you are. -yeah. -it's important, especiallyin the fashion industry, to actually forget about thepersonality of the people you're working with. just get the job done. [applause] diane von furstenberg:sunday at 10 o'clock. and you can tweet a lotso my ratings go up.
mary grove: beforewe close, i wanted to share with everyone thereare copies of diane's two new books. one is the memoir, "thewoman i wanted to be." i can't recommendit highly enough. i loved reading every word. and the second is thisbeautiful coffee table book, called "the journey of a dress." and diane will be with usa bit longer to sign them.
diane von furstenberg: if youhave the book on your laps, can you bring it up like thatso i could take a nice picture? all right. mary grove: give avery warm thank you.
fashion 2017 dresses
antonio: gentlemen, antonio here with realmen real style. and i've got this special guest. so, i just did an interview for pat'schannel, but this is patrick bet-david over at valuetainment. and i have to admit soyou guys always ask me, antonio what channels do you watch?you guys know i watch lot of fashion and style channels, but i also watch a lot of entrepreneurialchannels. you guys know i love entrepreneurs. i love people that are going out there changingthe world. well, i've got one of those people righthere. but, pat, maybe you can tell my audience who many of them don't know you, you cantell a little bit about yourself and who you are.patrick: sure. so, first of all, thank you
for having me on your channel. we love whatyou're doing as well, so feeling is mutual with what you're creating. you know thebest guy on youtube you can think about on teaching how to on the best educators in thattopic in my opinion the best guy. but, so for my background, i was born andraised in iran. i lived in iran ten years. i was born october 18, 1970 which was peakof the revolution in iran. ten years war the whole nine yards. then, khomeini dies june,3, 1989. i'm in school. we escaped six weeks later. i went to a refugee camp in germanyfor about two years. then, we come to the states - glendale, california.i go to school and i'm the kid that had the 1.8 gpa, i didn't do too well in schooland right after school, i joined the military.
and, like i was reminding you before aboutme learning early on that the reason why i chose army and i learned a lot about marinesand i had to learn to forgive that, you know you know, that no one's perfect especiallymarine friends like yourself that but i have to learn that early on from the forgivenesslevel. antonio: we'll leave it at that. you guyswill have to go watch and i'll link to it in the description. the interview i just didwith with him on his channel, but, yeah patrick: so, first of all, when i say thisi'm teasing. this is an officer who went to --got his undergrad and he goes to ut.i don't have that kind of a resume like and of if i was a soldier, i'm a privatei'm saluting to him when we're in the
military, so thank you for your service.antonio: but, what we're talking about success here.patrick: right. antonio: and we're talking about symbolwe're talking about symbolism, success, and a little about style here. but, i meanyou had some great success. you have how many agents now working?patrick: right. so, i mean i got out i wanted to be a bodybuilder. i was going to be thenext middle eastern arnold schwarzenegger marrying a kennedy and become a hollywoodsuperstar and i digress and went into the financial industry with morgan stanley deanwitter a day before 9/11. and, after morgan stanley i want to trans america on october20, 2009 which is seven years ago from today.
seven years ago, we started php agency becameofficial at a one office in northridge, california. we had about 66 agents what started off withand today, we have 2,500 agents in 49 states. by the end of the year, we'll be all 50states. so, we started off one state, 50 states and business has grown and accidentally fouryears ago, three years and eleven months ago, we started a youtube channel called valuetainment.initially, it was called two minutes with pat and then we realized i don't do anythingin two minutes, that was problematic. all the episodes will be seven minutes, eightminutes, but the episode was called two minutes with pat. so, it was pathetic, it was itwas that tells you how much we knew about what we were doing. maybe that's the reasonwhy we only had four hundred [subs] our first
year.and then, we focused on the topic of entrepreneurship, it's something that i know a lot about andwe got right into it and the next thing you know it started doing [rolls].so, i run a full time business. i have staff here you are on my headquarters you walk around.we have home office support here not counting our independent contractors and then our executivesin the field that run the sales offices and our vice presidents that we have in the field.and then, our vendors that we have and then our support team technology it people thatwe have. and then, at the same time, i do youtube part time. so, this has been a parttime gig. antonio: so, i was watching one of your othervideos, i'm going to link to it down the
description. but, it was your friends fromway back, they were saying about, okay, if anyone we saw is being successful, it was not goingto be you. so, how did you go from the bodybuilding thearmy to being good at finance because thats what i'm assuming is you actually have tobe good at finance to have a company with almost 2,500 agents?patrick: right. so, i think there's a few things. one is i think the word entrepreneurwhen you think about a word like if you think about if i, if i were to say somethingand you have to say that first word that comes to your mind. if i was the greatest basketballplayer of all time, you would probably say michael jordan, let's just say. you knowthe greatest baseball player of all time,
you may say babe ruth. the greatest presidentof all time, you may say lincoln or reagan or kennedy or whatever.if you tell me what you think about entrepreneur what do you think about, i think about mathis what i think about. and why math? because to me everything that runs that light is allmath. the amount of circles that's has got there, this is math. these cameras use mathsupport. this is an angle that's rectangle it's math. business is math.you when you were talking earlier with 242, he was talking math of color coordinatinguniforms, all you need is four shirts, two suits, two shoes you can combine, that'spurely math to me. [0:05:09] but, the transition in my life whenyou say my friends, no one in a million years
thought i was going to do anything, no one,not a single soul. i joined the army because i was not going to be accepted by any --communitycolleges wouldn't accept me. you told a story that was very touching onwhat happened with your sister in 2009 and i experienced something similar to that. wheni get a call, my dad had a major heart attack. my dad has had thirteen heart attacks. he'shad six angiograms, six angioplasty, three stents in his heart.and, when he had his heart attack, i went to ucla medical center in la and i never forgetwhen i went i went upstairs and all the nurses i was so annoyed with everybody because nobodywas around. i'm just kind of like why is my dad not getting better treatment. well, that's a government service, you're not
going to get the best treatment because wedon't have the money to give him the best treatment.i went downstairs in my car, i cried like a little baby for one hour in my ford focusand i was so disappointed with myself that here's a man that brought me to americawith my mother. it cost them a divorce. they sacrificed every single friendship and relationshipand family and everything they ever knew. it's not like they came here at 22, theycame in their 40's. and here i am lollygagging with my life and this man is having all theseheart attacks because of stress of finances. he works at 99 cent store in inglewood. iwas so upset with myself, i'm so upset with myself that i'll tell you the next day myeyes were completely changed i got a hold
of 83 questions in august of 2003 that i wentto el matador beach by myself for six hours. i went to one of these, i call it the ultimateself-discovery questionnaire that i have on my website and, from there things changed.i look at things differently, everybody that wanted to ask me to go club i was very goodat clubs. if you went to clubs with me, you will have a good time with me. i was fondat nightclubs ladies all that other stuff. i just found that the only girl you ever kissedis your wife which is unbelievably impressive. we're part of the same club. me too baby, just you're the only girl i've ever kissed too.but, i was a complete different thing. once the shift happened, i told my friends don'tcall me about nightclubs, don't call me
about parties, don't call me about anything.it was a certain level of obsession that almost and i understand from their point of view,i rub them the wrong way because it was too much of a 180.so, a lot of my friends you talked to, they'll say this that we would have never thoughtpat would do this, but i was not going to let my dad die without him seeing my kidsone day. that was very, very important to me. and, thank god he's still around. he's74 years old today, he is still around and all my kids he's had a chance to see andthat was very important to me. so, that was my driving force at that time.antonio: see a lot of people that watch my channel, they think it's about style inclothing and that's not exactly true. if
anyone's watch my channel they know thatthis is about helping men be better men. one of the things we always talk about guys isan emotional component to get you to transition whether it'd be to dress sharper or to turnyour life around and actually so, you started studying finance and just gettinginto this? why finance? patrick: so, i'll tell you the truth here,i'm going to have to confess. i'm at venice beach and this one girl approaches me veryattractive girl when we start talking, okay? and this is in 2001 and so we start goingon dates and every time we go on dates she has nice cars. she picks me up in a porsche,in a mercedes, in a lexus and i don't have the nicest cars at that time.so, finally i said, how do you make your money?
and she says, well, i'm in the financialindustry. and i said, who are you with? she said, i'm with morgan stanley deanwitter. i said, i want to work at morgan stanley dean witter. she said, you can't,you need a degree. you got to go i went to ucla. she went to ucla. i said, i'mnot getting a degree. and so, you know, eventually i send out ahundred resumes to morgan, merrill, schwab, smith barney, all these other guys. and wheni send the resumes, i my resumes obviously is terrible because resumes army, it's bob'sbig boy which i don't know if you know bob's big boy?antonio: i don't know bob's big boy. patrick: it's burger king and haagen-dazs.okay. so, you there's nothing impressive
about haagen-dazs, you know, there's nothingimpressive about bob's big boy. and at burger king they never even made me a cashier, atleast let me touch the money. they said you can just be a chef is what i call myself.you'd say whopper no onions, i made it for you. that's what i did as a 6'4" guywearing an extra medium shirt, small shirts and i'm making those whoppers.so, i sent my resumes and i said, that's not going to give me the job, but i had tobe creative. so, i put the cover letter, i chose my best joke and i put it at the top.opening line cover letter is a joke. then, below the joke it says, if you're laughingand this made you smile and you feel better, this is exactly how my clients are going tofeel when they do business with me. if you
want somebody like this part of your team, give me a call. okay? thirty calls out of the hundredresumes. fifteen of them were simply calls to say you're hilarious, but we're notinterested, you're not qualified. antonio: yeah.patrick: i'd say goldman sachs is not going to hire someone like me. but, luckily i gotfifteen calls that were interviews. i went in i got two or three job offers. i chosemorgan stanley and that's how i got started. as a matter of fact, it was a day before 9/11.my first day was monday 9/10. antonio: yeah.patrick: with morgan stanley. i'm supposed to go to new york to the world trade centernext day. morgan stanley's headquarter of
3,600 employees is in the world trade center.9/11 happens the next day, so it wasn't the best time to get into the industry, butthat's how i got involved in the industry. antonio: i love the fact you throw out a hundredresumes and you took that unique approach of which only fifteen people really were serious.of course, fifty one let you know you're funny.patrick: yes. antonio: and probably wished you good luck.and i think you really humanized a process which can almost dehumanized people. and youwere able to most importantly get the job offers and get your foot in the door.now, getting your foot in the door is one thing, but actually becoming good at this.how did you stay focus in i mean you're
talking about you didn't see yourself asmaybe the smartest guy, but you still were able to be good at this?patrick: yeah. so, for me, i did a video for twenty years, i'm 38 now. okay, let'sjust say since i became in sales, i got into sales at 20 years old. for eighteen years,we talk to people and we ask them that corny question that everybody asks which is what'sthe key to success. you get asked that a million times, right?what's the key to success? hey, antonio what's your key to success to the channelthat you have? and what's the key to success to life? and we have all these answers. so,i've collected all the answers, people would say, you know, key to success in life is marryingthe right person. cool. that's great. write
it. the key to success is hard work, key tosuccess is respect, it's love, it's faith, it's capitalism, it's loving people andcaring and giving back and ta ta and all these stuff that you hear about. great.but, it's still not the answer to me, so i wanted to find that if i could transferone skill to my two sons and my daughter. what is the one skill i would love for themto learn? and finally, i came to conclusion and in my mind now no one can change my mindin this area, yet, not one has yet to make me believe that certain thing is more importantthan learning this one skill set and here's what it is.i believe everything in life is about solving for x and the most important skill set youcan learn in life is how to process issues.
what do i mean by how to process issues? whenthey say the key to success is marrying the right person, i say that's the that'snot the seed, the seed is you have to learn how to process issues on who the right personfor you is to marry, right? for instance, how to process issues is ifa kid you tell him don't do drugs, don't do this, don't do that. here, son, i wantyou to watch a scene here from walk the line and walk the line, you know, johnny cash isoffered by jerry lee lewis these drugs to take and he says take any. he says i don'twant to take any, says, look, elvis takes it, then he takes it.we can show that scene to our boys, but that kid is going to be offered cocaine or drugsor ecstasy or whatever it is nowadays. i need
to teach him how to process issues when thathappens. i need to teach him how to process issues when a girl comes and says, hey, let'ssmoke this weed together and let's have sex. if you smoke it will do this.i can't tell him don't do it, but i can teach him how to process issues, right? becauseyou and i faced it, not you and i, because we kiss one girl, but they're going to faceit, right? antonio: yes.patrick: the point is when you ask what was the key to success for me in the business,i had to process issues and ask myself what is my number one product. and my number oneproduct wasn't math, my number one product was people. i had to understand people. ihad to study people, i had to watch people.
when you and i were interviewing and in themiddle of the interview, i just realized half the questions i shouldn't have even askedyou, it's not even to ask you for what? you already know exactly who your customers, you already know exactly what you're doing. you are so clear and self-aware of what you'redoing with your business that if anything anybody can learn from you is to know thatyou'll learn who your ideal customers and you tailor to them.so, for me i had to learn who my customer was and it was people and i had to learn howto deal with people. and the numbers was easy because with the numbers, yeah, i'm notthe smartest guy at the company. our president is a guy that took [jamdap] public and soldit for $680 million. now, that guy is he can
do laps around me.our chief compliance officer has every single license under the sun, he was my branch managerin 2002. he's our chief compliance officer. i am not smarter than him, but it's people.then, you have to put a team of special specialized people around you while you know how to dealwith the people if you can put specialized knowledge around you, then you have a solidteam that can help you grow your business. so, i would say that's probably the thetop reason is i process the issues of what was the number one thing i can learn and thenumber one thing guy to learn in my business was people.[0:15:00] antonio: all right. we're going to go withthat. so, i want to transition the interview
a bit away from talking about, you know, thebusiness side, let's talk about like symbolism. so, i've been walking around your officeand i've looked at i mean from the logo of your company and from the name of it tothe colors that you chose. can you talk a little bit about that like?patrick: we're really going to get into this, this is exciting. so, the truth is weare a gang except we are running a business. that's really the truth.no, but, you know, you and i were talking earlier and you said how much you miss themilitary, the part of it of camaraderie. and, you and i were kind of talking about it briefly.when i got out of the military i talked to my buddy, jeff recently. he and i were speakingand he works special ops and this guy called
him super soldier. he is he was the guythat i mean him and i were buddies and you know what it is when you have your boy inthe army , no one can separate the two of you. you guys are just buddies. he backs youup, you back him up. that level of camaraderie i got in the militarywas very important to me to my life. so, when i came out and i started a company it wasvery important for me to get that same exact experience and feeling to the people thatwork in this company and symbolism is a part of it.if you think about i was at a dinner at wayne hughes house. his son's house in malibuand they brought a speaker -- wayne, he was the founder of republic storage it's wortharound $4 billion. i think it's like the
72nd richest man in the world.and they brought a speaker, dennis prager, they brought. and, you may know dennis prager.they brought dennis prager and he got up and he spoke, he said, what makes religionspowerful? i think about what he said. so, i'm like, whoa, we're going in a deepend right now because it's now controversial conversation, what religion? he said rituals.he said what makes a great sports team special. okay, now we're going to the safer. he saysrituals. when you play for notre dame and you go through the thing, you hit the whatmakes the celtics so special? rituals. what makes the military so special? rituals. whatmakes special family so special? rituals. so, what are your rituals?so, now our company we have rituals, you know,
for valuetainment we have a very unique logo.we call the [ligon]. there's a lot of meaning behind that valuetainment logo that we havewith the color that we have php with the red, white, and blue. and the hand, there's ameaning behind that because for a guy like myself, i mean i did not get to where i'mat because i have these special abilities and i'm just extremely smart, etc, etc.i got to where i'm at because somebody at some point inspired me lifted me up pushedme, challenged me and they were willing to take the time to educate me and i was serious,i was committed, but they're willing to take the time to help me and they help meget to the next level and that list is a long list of names.so, symbolism is it has to mean a lot to you,
you can't just put it up here and say, hey,you know, this is cool, it's going to get people's attention. we had somebody on youtubejust took our logo and they changed the is literally just the i's and they added itto their logo. and i'm like looking at myself saying, you can do that all day long, butit's like the people in china that take a logo of nike and they call it nice you know.but, and the swoosh goes the other way around. you're not going to be nike. it has to havemeaning to you and every one of these logos has a lot of meaning to us, has a lot of meaningto us. antonio: now, what about the culture? it seemslike i noticed everyone's office, i mean you actually put time and a lot of peoplewith the environment that they're working
in, look like they're having a lot of fun.i saw that everyone decorating patrick: yes.antonio: somebody went rock and roll, they pointed that out to me to mario. i mean doyou feel that the environment we put ourselves in actually has an effect is that important?patrick: yes, absolutely. you know we happen to be in the most boring industry in the world.i hope you know this. like i don't know if you know what i sell for a livingantonio: i was going to say patrick: i'm going to say -- i can say it,we sell life insurance. antonio: yeah.patrick: that's what we sell just so you know. you know what life insurance is? it'slife insurance. you know what we have to talk
about, this is what we talk about. bob, mary, what are you going to do one day when bob dies? what are you going to do with thesethree kids? now, let me tell you nothing about what ijust told you is exciting. well, you know what happened this week? here's what happenedthis week. we had an 82-year old grandmother who just passed away. her final expense andburial is covered. she died yesterday. we got it. we had a spouse, a husband that iknow who met her, his wife, erica who's a sweet' she work at engineer lady that'smaking 150, 160 extremely brilliant. they meet each other, you look at him you'relike, my gosh, i am just you guys are perfect for each other. last week motorcycleaccident, boom. it happens. i love riding
motorcycle, it can happen to the best of us,but it happened to him. that's the industry i chose to be a part of. now, that gets myheart and initially it didn't because i thought it was purely business and talkingabout dying, but there's a crusade and a heart behind the industry why i chose to bea part of. now, i'm in love with this industry. [0:20:00] but what's the boring part ofit? look, i dress like this and i brought you in because i think our guys can learna lot from you on how incredible of an educator you are when it comes unto style. there'sa lot of solid education you bring to people on style.but, i want to mix up the life insurance industry. i want to disrupt the life insurance industry.i don't want the life insurance industry
to just go out and everybody wears brooksbrothers all the time with cole haan shoes and trying to attract millenials and gen x'sand gen y's because they're not turn on by that.when you look at the industry that went from a half a million license agents in america1974 to today, it's roughly 200,000 life insurance licensed agents. how do we go froma half a million to 200 when the population is 1974 is 209 and now, we're at 317 orwhatever the number is today. how do we increase the population by 50%, but agents decreaseby 60%, how did that happen? they have completely forgotten how to connectwith the audience. so, going back when you say the industry and the company was thisintentional. i think, one, you got to know
your product which you do. two, i think yougot to let people represent themselves. mario loves metallica. what's your favorite? isit metallica? what's the song that you like to play with, the guitar?mario: fade to black. patrick: say it again?mario: fade to black. patrick: fade to black. and he plays it andlet me tell you. i watch him, he's in the zone. that's mario.paul, he loves to watch the movie, i don't know why he loves to watch a movie. we foundout about this earlier, the documentary. paul is so driven by movies and his favorite movieof all time is what? the forty year old virgin. i don't know why he loves the movie, buthe loves that movie, right? he is fascinated
by that movie.and, we were trying to figure out why all this time, but he loves the movie. so, ifyou go to his cubicle maybe you should get some b-rolls so we can show it. it's allhollywood, but that's him. he is like the most incredible editor i've ever met inmy life. you see any of the videos that we do of editing? he does it.antonio: yeah. and, after this afternoon, he's going to be a great dresser as well.patrick: he is going to be a great dresser because you you brother we brought youand kelly nishimoto. some of you guys got to see this becauseantonio: we'll link to that video. we're going to have lots of videos for you guys.patrick: so, we chose antonio's because
we said we got to bring two of the best stylistsi know, one from the men's perspective one form a woman's perspective. kelly nishimotowho has her own show and she had something new something borrowed. she's very well-knownin hollywood. we brought her. she's got the pink hair.you could put the pics so they can see. and then, we brought antonio. and there's abattle to see who can make a miracle happen for paul. and paul goes on his first datewhich attire is going to get the girl to say, oh, my gosh. so, that's why we brought antonio.but going back to it, i think you got to you got to kind of let people do their own brandand their own identity and we try to do our best for our people to do that, so it'sworked out well.
antonio: i like it. i like how you're that'svery interesting point the number of agents has actually dropped. i had no idea.patrick: yeah. antonio: yeah, you're in an industry whicha lot of people just it's not something that you think people would as a kid say,oh, i want to become a, you know, i want to sell insurance. i mean kids want to be astronauts.i wanna be cowboys. patrick: yes.antonio: they want to be football players. patrick: yes.antonio: all that fun stuff. and, but you've really focused in on the emotional component,i have to admit i never thought i would be talking about clothing, owned a custom-clothierget into the fashion or style industry. earnestly
it wasn't attractive to me, but what keepsme in this is being able to work with men and to help me. sopatrick: and, you're obviously doing that. you're not just doing it out of small scale, you're doing it at a very, very large scale yourself.antonio: well, thank you, you know. now, so you're looking at, you know, your guys beingable to go out there reach for people to be able to connect. how do you see image playinginto that like style and clothing, how was it do you have anything i mean besidesyou used to wear uniform? patrick: yes.antonio: and it was one patrick: yes.antonio: if you saw a kid walking down the
street let's say 20-year old guy wearinga shirt, it's got like a ranger tab right here. are you going to take offense to thator you're going to look at that and say, is he out of the, you know, ability to wearranger tab? what actually kind of i don't know it irk me. i'm not even a ranger, buti do know that patrick: of course.antonio: so, can you talk a little bit about how maybe your time in the army and goingforward is kind of change maybe your perception of how you look at uniforms and how you lookat clothing an image? patrick: so, i think this will be great foryour audience because i happen to be a ceo of a firm that's, you know, is called thefastest growing financial firm in america.
we're growing seven years, so we're doingvery well. but, sometimes i have to also explain who i was before i became the ceo the entrepreneur.so, i get out of the military. my uniform in high school was, you know, a dickiespants or, you know, whatever kind of shoes you wore. i grew i'm a payless kid,so we didn't grow up having money. my mother, you know, i'm a welfare child parents gota divorce. antonio: payless shoes are good for threedays, the after that patrick: [laughs]antonio: because i wore them too and they start to break down the sides. do you rememberthat? [0:24:59]patrick: listen, there's a story of me working
at burger king. my buddy, [devine cogen] ifthey watch this and [devine cogen], if you guys watch this, you got to comment on thebottom. the biggest joke at burger king was you canalways tell where pat is because a piece of his payless shoe is like laying around everywhere,so you're right about the three-day thing. so, after that i go in the military and then, all of a sudden you wear these pdus and you wear your greens and, you know, you have these, you know, quartermaster and they put them in and it's creased and if you like starch.i fell in love with starch. i mean i just want to starch everything underwears beingstarched, you know, the first time you found out about starch, like sucks it's got tobe starched jeans.
you'd go around with these, you know, thewhole lines, we don't have it anymore, but i used to have it back in the days. and then, you get out and you realize you don't need to starch everything, you need to kind ofrelax with the starch and you're overdosing on starch.so, i get out and i don't know what to wear. you know this is i'm 38, so at my timei don't know if you even remember the nightclubs we'd go to was [florentine gardens] andit was a club called vegas and it was what? vegas and the [don]. it was vegas and [don].and the main djs was [richard humpyvision] [bad boy bill]. i don't know if you rememberany of this music. so, it was muscle shirts. so, i'm the muscleshirt guys. so, picture the muscle shirt guy
that weird-looking muscle shirt guys thatwore the jeans the bell bottoms and the skechers shoes. that was me that was my outfit. andi'm trying to get into the financial and no one's going to invest you wear skechersand muscle shirts and any of these. antonio: yeah.patrick: that's pretty pathetic and embarrassing. so, then all of a sudden i get invited tomy first introduction to the financial industry. and this guy says you got to come meet thisexecutive, i want to introduce him to you because, you know, he may, you know, introduceyou to financial industry. i'm at the gym, so dude just come meet with him anyways. isaid i'm telling you i'm at the gym. he says, come anyways. here's what i wore atmy first meeting. ready?
i had orange perfetto pants which perfettowent out of business, but perfetto pants were the best workout pants. my favorite by far.i wish they come back. i wanted to buy them out, but they wouldn't call me back. so,perfetto pants, i wore my perfetto pants. i'm wearing tank tops and at that time myfirst time getting into the financial industry. it was summer time, so i had peroxide on myhair to get some orange highlights because when you put peroxide, you don't want tolisten to this stuff. so, he's got good looking hair, so don't listen to anythingi'm telling you. antonio's son is back there, so i don't want him to go home puttingperoxide on his hair. i had peroxide on my hair and my hair is orangeblack brown, very weird. that's how i got
started. i knew nothing about fashion. zeroabout fashion. i don't know how to tie a tie. i don't know nothing about any of thatstuff. and, i had to transition and i had to learn how to go from a guy who is cluelessthere to now i want to be a serious seven broker licensed agent and getting people toinvest for me $100,000, $500,000, $300,000 or buying an insurance policy, it just didn'tmake sense, so i had to get my uniform. so, once i got the basic ideas about a uniform, the book that i read back then was how to how gentlemen dresses or how gentlemenget dressed by brooks brothers sells those books, very good book. they also have howladies get dressed. and, i started reading a book, i really immersed myself into wantingto learn about i mean i wish you were
around in 2001 when i first started with morganstanley dean witter. i truly wish you were around. you would have saved me a lot of salesbeing lost, but i started. and, next thing you know i realized that someappointments, they would just kind of look at you like this and i said, wow, that lookwas not a good look because antonio: so, this goes back to you studyingpeople and patrick: oh, of courseantonio: you realizing that there having what you're wearing is having an effect on.patrick: so, i met a guy named glenn hopkins who was in my class. glenn hopkins used todo spiderman. so, he was a hollywood guy and went to morgan stanley, killed it in the financialindustry. he's doing very well.
and so, we go to morgan stanley dean wittertraining in mark hopkins hotel in san francisco for three weeks. and, i shared a room witha guy named ed, real nice guy, but glenn hopkins and i became very close. and he said, i'mgoing to teach you a lot of things. he was 20 years older than me at that time, fifteenyears older than me. and he said he says, look, let's playa game. so, what game is this? he says, let's go to a coffee shop, follow me. we go to acoffee shop. he says how much money do you think that guy is worth? i say, i don'tknow. he says, let me tell you what he's worth. those shoes he's wearing are $1,200.you know the what do you call it? the watch he has on, it's a $65,000 watch. doyou see the shirt? it looks like a cheap white
